Although not mineralized, amber is often considered a gemstone and has been included in many pieces of jewellery throughout the ages. Amber is actually fossil tree resin, which is the semi-solid amorphous, organic substance that is secreted in pockets and canals through the plant. It is not (as it is often assumed to be) tree sap.

Amber occurs in a range of different colours, varying from a whitish yellow through a pale lemon shade to a brown, almost black variety. More uncommon colours include red (or cherry) amber, green amber and even blue amber, a rare and sought after colour choice.

About 92% of the world's extractable amber is located in the Baltic Sean region. Most amber dates from between 35 to 40 million years ago. Some amber is considered to be up to 345 million years old.

Along the beaches of northern Poland, amber has long ridden the waves of the Baltic Sea, washing ashore in troves. Near modern-day Gdansk, the first ancient amber guilds (or artisans) formed to ply and perfect the glowing treasure thrown upon their shores. These ancient amber guilds have treated us with a science and reverence that over the centuries has produced the world's finest amber jewellery. That tradition continues to live in the pieces you'll discover at The Shopping Channel.

How to care for your Amber:
Clean your amber with lukewarm water and mild soap. Do not use chemical cleaners. Shine with a bit of vegetable oil. Store your jewellery separately so that it does not scratch, and put it on only after using your cosmetics and hair spray.

Choker: 12 to 13 inches in length

Choker necklaces are made up of one to three or more strands and lie snugly in the middle of your neck. This luxurious look is very Victorian and goes best with off-the-shoulder or elegant V-neck fashions.

Collar: 14 to 16 inches in length

A classic length that accents virtually any outfit and compliments all necklines. This is the most versatile of all single strand lengths.

Princess: 17 to 19 inches in length

The princess length necklace is best suited for crew and high necklines. It also compliments low plunging necklines. It's perfect support for a pendant or enhancer.

Matinee: 20 to 24 inches in length

Longer than the princess, and just a bit shorter than an opera length, the matinee necklace is the right choice for casual or business dressing.

Opera: 28 to 34 inches in length

The opera necklace is the queen of all lengths. When worn as a single strand, it is refined and perfect for high or crew necklines. When doubled upon itself, it serves as a versatile two strand collar.

Rope: 40 inches and over in length

Dripping with elegance the rope necklace was a favourite of Coco Chanel. Wrap it to create multi-strand necklaces and bracelets or double it around your waist for a slimming effect.

Very Disappointed

Par Likes to Shop

Received this necklace and sent it back the next day. The leather cord was kinked and the chain piece was not connected to it. When I tried to put the chain piece on so I could claspe the necklace together it slipped off the cord. There was a huge smudge of glue on the back of the amber and sliver piece. The necklace I recieved should not have been shipped, but sent back to Amber Extraordinaire, as it was poorly made.

Simple yet elegant

Love this design but like it better on my omega chain. The leather cord is a very casual look, great with jeans and a white blouse but not for a dressier look. The craftsmanship is superb and the design is very modern but classy. The butter amber
Is very organic and accents all the great fall colours in fashion very nicely.

Nice pendant, shame about the cord.

I bought this in the green amber. It is a lovely pendant, quite bold and modern with a thin profile.
The amber cabochon is a good size and the silver around it is bright and impressive.

It is however spoilt by the cheapy leather cord, whis is rough and thin, more like rolled paper than leather. Unfortunately because of the narrow tubular bale, the pendant cannot be removed from the cord unless one were to cut it, or remove the fiddly extender.
The overall look is nice, but I have deducted a star because of the cord.
