'Blue Mouse Ears' is one of the most popular new mini hostas. Because of its small stature it's perfect for containers and rock gardens. Slug resistant!

Hostas are hardy, versatile perennials that are perfect for shaded gardens and require little care. They offer large, bold leaves often marked with contrasting colours. They thrive in all soils from pure clay to boggy ground and they usually get bigger every year. The leaves range in shape from round to lance-shaped, and colours can be yellow to green to blue, often with white, yellow or green marginal markings.

Their dense foliage crowds out most garden weeds. Hostas will bear flowers, usually lavender or white flowers, that grow on tall stalks in mid- to late summer. They make a wonderful contrast when planted with small-leaved plants and most certainly add texture to the landscape.

Interpreting the map

The new hardiness map is divided into nine major zones: the harshest is 0 and the mildest is 8. Relatively few plants are suited to zone 0. Subzones (e.g., 4a or 4b, 5a or 5b) are also noted in the map legend. These subzones are most familiar to Canadian gardeners.

Some significant local factors, such as micro-topography, amount of shelter and subtle local variations in snow cover, are too small to be captured on the map. Year-to-year variations in weather and gardening techniques can also have a significant impact on plant survival in any particular location.
