Gold-filled items are very durable. The 14K gold layer will not wear off, as it is not a plated product, but a lifetime product. The gold-filled sheet metal and wire are made by bonding surface layers of gold to a supporting layer of brass with heat and pressure and then rolling or drawing out the metal to a desired thickness. The finished product has a surface layer of gold that is very thick compared to gold plate or the heaviest electroplate metals. The degree to which 14K gold-filled and 14K solid gold will tarnish is the same and is dependent on the acidity of the wearer's skin. Cleaning and product care is the same for both. Abrasive cleaners such as steel wool or lotion should not be used to clean the jewellery as this will eventually thin and wear down the gold layers.
