The main design of this coin is the ship "The Matthew". It is thought that John Cabot discovered Newfoundland in this ship in 1497. Below the ship is the Latin phrase "FLOREAT TERRA NOVA," which means "MAY THE NEW FOUND LAND FLOURISH". The obverse design features an uncrowned portrait of King George VI.
In 1949, the Royal Canadian Mint struck Canada's third commemorative dollar coin to mark Newfoundland joining Canadian confederation. While the vast majority of these coins entered circulation, this is a superb gem uncirculated example of this popular coin.
