The Four Cs of Diamonds

There are four main factors that affect the value of a diamond, commonly referred to as “the 4 Cs.” The cut, colour, clarity and carat weight all contribute to the rarity, and therefore price, of a diamond.

CUT:
The cut is a diamond's most important characteristic. The way a diamond is cut affects how it handles light and has great influence on the diamond's overall sparkle. The closer to ideal proportions that a diamond is cut, the more light will reflect back to the eye, resulting in the fire and brilliance that make diamonds so beautiful and so popular. Shallow or deep cuts allow light to seep out of the bottom or escape out of the side.

COLOUR:
Diamonds with absolutely no colour are extremely rare. Colour actually refers to a diamond's lack of colour with D being perfectly colourless. The subtle differences in colour among most gem-quality diamonds are due to traces of other elements that were present during the diamond’s formation millions of years ago. Diamonds are rated on a letter scale indicating the degree of yellowish tinge from D all the way to Z, which is markedly yellowy. E and F are colourless to the naked eye, and G, H and I will appear very nearly colourless, particularly in a gold setting. After cut, colour is generally considered the second most important characteristic when selecting a diamond.

While the fire of perfectly colourless diamonds will never go out of style, modern jewellers and jewellery lovers have discovered the incredible beauty of coloured diamonds in gorgeous shades of blue, green, pink, chocolate and even black, and may people prize yellow (or "canary") diamonds for their luminous colour.

CLARITY:
Diamonds usually contain "inclusions", which are small markers of how the diamond formed deep within the earth. Very few diamonds are without inclusions, and such stones are termed "flawless." Inclusions do not necessarily affect beauty, but they do affect value. Many imperfections are microscopic and those with the least and smallest imperfections receive the highest clarity grades.

Diamond Clarity

FL, IF Flawless, Internally Flawless: No internal or external inclusions visible under 10X magnification to a trained eye. The most expensive grade. Very rare.
VVS1, VVS2 Very, Very Slightly Included: Inclusions visible only to a trained eye under 10X magnification. Excellent quality.
VS1, VS2 Very Slightly Included: Small inclusions visible with 10X magnification. Not typically visible to the unaided eye.
SI1, SI2 Slightly Included: Varying degrees of small inclusions visible with 10X magnification. A good value.
I1, I2, I3 Included: Flaws may be visible to the naked eye in larger stones.

CARAT WEIGHT:

Carat weight is the term that people are most familiar with. Carat is a measure of the diamond's weight and may not reflect its size. To understand its size, you need to consider the distance across the top of the diamond measured in millimetres and the cut grade. One carat equals 1/5 of a gram, or 1/142 of an ounce. Each carat is divided into 100 points, so a 3/4 carat diamond can also be said to weigh 75 points or .75 carat. As the weight increases, the rarity increases dramatically… and so does its value.

Better Clarity this Time Around

By Joyce

from Edmonton

Silver Reviewer

Considering that all diamonds are unique, I decided to order another pair of the .80 carat diamond earrings. The new pair are much clearer than the first pair and I will keep these! Considering the price, these new earrings are an acceptable clarity. As I write this review, the earrings are in direct sunlight and are giving off really nice sparkle! Thanks TSC and the Diamond Show.

Very upsetting

By JUDITH

from VICTORIA

I ordered the .80 studs as a birthday present for myself and was so excited to finally be getting a pair of diamond studs. Of the pair I received one had black spots visible to the naked eye and the other was cloudy. There is no way this pair had an appraised value of $2000. let alone the show stopper price. Where was quality control?

Poor Clarity!

By Joyce

from Edmonton

Silver Reviewer

I got the .40 pt earrnings and they were really nice and sparkly. So when the .80 pointers came back into supply, I ordered them. What a disappointment. Big flaws are noticeble in all lights especially sunshine. I will be returning these.

Lovely for the size.

By Car

I cannot believe the negative reviews!! The only disappointing thing that I can comment on is the size of the earings. I missed out on the .80 ctw. I was able to purchase the .40 ctw and they are smaller than what I am accustom to. But I took my earings to the jeweler and she advised that the colour is nice and clarity is good. Lots of sparkle, she said that it could have been cut differently and it would have sparkled even more. She told me that the pricing is exceptional for the quality of the earings. My earings were back-ordered, perhaps this is the reason why I recieved my wonderful earings. Impressed with this line and will purchase again.

Disappointing

By Grandma Okanagan

from British Columbia

We were surprised and disappointed when we opened the box containing the .40 diamond studs I'd ordered. They were two different sizes! One stone was definitely .40 and the other visibly smaller? The person I'd ordered them for decided to have them returned rather than risk exchanging them.

Despite the excellent price asked for these, as ShowStoppers, we really were expecting a better quality than what was sent to us. Not the best of quality, but we were expecting a reasonably good quality.

I am happy to see there were other people who received some nice sets. And, very sorry to see there are others who were disappointed, as we were.

Not As Expected !!!

By Lover of jewellery!

from Toronto

Gold Reviewer

I usually don't like to write a negative review. However, I was disappointed when I received today these earrings in white gold and found that one of the stones was chipped. For this price I think that the size was right. The earrings sparkle but having a chipped earring wasn't what I expected. I am a fan of the Diamond Show and have many jewellery from them. It is my fault I should not have ordered on waitlist as this means that someone returned it and that would be for a reason as these earrings are very nice.

Where`s the Shine/

By ambera

from Lacombe,Alberta

Bronze Reviewer

I was so excited to get these earrings. I ordered the .80 carat. I noticed right away that the shine wasn`t very good. Not like they should be for earrings this large. Also,I was surprised that they didn`t have the screw on backing. Any earring in this price range always has a backing that protects the earring from coming undone so that you don`t loose it. They felt cheap to me so I sent them back.

gorgeous but short

By MARY

from KAMLOOPS

Gold Reviewer

I got the .80 & just loved them but the studs were to short .I have 1 large lobe.& when I tried them on the piece that holds them on fell off the large lobe, so saddly had to return them.I still miss them. If you have normal lobes, you,ll love them. The stones were good for the price.

Not Impressed

By Antoinette

from Brampton, Ontario

I was really looking forward to receiving my first pair of diamond earrings as a birthday present to myself. Upon opening the package I was first of all surprised at how small the size of the .80 carat was. The colour also seemed to be foggy and the butterfly post backing was very flimsy. For the price, I was definitely not impressed. I had them returned to TSC on the same date of receiving them. It would be great if the hostess could give a more accurate description of the item.
