The Shopping Channel | About Thread Count & Ply At The Shopping Channel we have made a commitment to ensure quality in our sheets and accuracy in thread count. Thread count is the number of individual threads in a square inch. All of our sheets are sent out to an independent laboratory for testing to ensure accuracy. We also make certain that our sheets are single ply. Single ply produces a higher quality, tighter weave and softer product. What this means is that there are single threads on the warp (horizontal direction) and single threads on the weft or fill (vertical direction) to create a single ply. Adding the number of single threads in each direction in an inch provides the thread count. |
In some cases there may be multiple pick insertions or parallel threads, which are also considered single ply. |
In the following example, the yarns are twisted together to create a single thread, therefore there are only 8 threads not 16. Each twisted yarn is a multiple ply yarn. However, in some cases these may be incorrectly advertised at a higher thread count (16 in this case) as they are inaccurately counting yarns and not threads. The yarns used may be thinner and weaker, however, the result is a heavier fabric. |
