Nokia Lumina 520
By Cookie the techie
I got the Nokia 520 to replace my Bell cell phone as I no longer needed a full on plan. Unless you understand how Pay-as-you-go works, you will be confused. The $40 has to be put into the account the first month, unless you get into a more complex pay-as-you-go plan. There are loads of options and take your time to explore the good and the not so good. I am testing this plan and may move up to the yearly text/talk one. The phone is great! I love it. If you are used to a tablet then you will have no problem getting to know your new phone. It's fast, clear and fun to use. Right now I am testing the battery life. If you use it or leave it on, I found it lasted just over 24 hours. Right now I'm leaving if in the total off position and will see how long that lasts. But Rogers has covered all the bases, there are so many options to keep your cell powered up. It's a great phone/plan for anyone who doesn't require a lot of talk time, text time or any data on the go. It was a little shocking to see a $7 charge for a 2 minute call but it was long distance. It's 50 cents for each minute or part of a minute. Cost me $1 for a 62 second call home to say I was on my way, ouch. So, as long as you are careful and as long as you make sure you top up on the date they tell you to, then you will be fine. But you must remember, do not top up early (unless you need to) as then your next top up required will be from that early date. The Rogers help, which is out of Manilla, is very good. The CSRs really take the time to help and they are very respectful to older customers.

This is a very nice phone. However it took 4 times with me trying to set it up, to actually get it done.I have purchased 3 other telephones from rogers and have been very satisfied with them
What a great deal
I have been using this phone as a media device, much cheaper than an IPod Touch and does so much more. It is also a full use Offline GPS. The value is unbeatable for what is included- the portable battery charger is about a $30.00 value on its own. I would buy this again.

Love this phone!

I am extremely happy with this phone. I had an old phone where texting was awkward on a pull-out keyboard and it was generally inefficient. This one, although only an entry-level Windows phone, is so much better. I feel I have joined this century as far as cell phones go. I didn't find the set-up too difficult although I talked to Rogers about a few issues at the beginning and they were helpful. They set up the same phone number I already had, along with voice mail, and I'm using it happily. The $40 pay-as-you-go coupon made a big difference to the value. Unlike other reviewers I understood the 30 day expiry, but as long as you add money to the account the time continues on. You need to take time to understand how pay-as-you-go works. I usually add $100 and that lasts 12 months. I'm very glad I bought this phone.
Not what I needed
I thought that this was a good deal. But I realized that this prod. was not for me. I AM NOT A TECHY.I just needed a phone for emergency, not textting & all the other bells & whistles. I did not even activate it after reading all & I mean all the literature that came with it. Just not the phone for me, so I returned it. I am not saying that this is not a good phone, just that it is not for me.
VERY DIFFICULT TO SET UP
By Carrie, the whistleblower

It looked easy when shown. However, I have had a lot of problems setting it up. I have charged the battery but it does not last. I would really like to keep this phone but it seems that I will have to return it. When I first received the phone I called and spoke to one of Rogers' staff. At first she was "impatient" and by being polite to her she calmed down and answered my questions. (They must have received a lot of calls from irate callers). But I cannot get the phone to work (e.g. calling from another phone to the smart phone); it does not come with a micro SD card and I inserted one from another TSC product. Why does not the battery stay charged for the 14.5 hours? I have turned it off, so why doesn't it stay charged instead of discharging within an hour or so? I also chose a blue cover but I cannot get those little black plugs to stay put. (I wanted to change from the black). I hope Rogers read these comments (they run TSC) and do something. I would really like to keep this and I am wondering if I go to a Rogers store in Vancouver if they would be able to help me? Can someone please help? Thanks.

I read some of the low rated comments and have a few points. You can keep your same phone number by using the SIM card in your old phone. The $40.00 was used to top up my account and like all other monthly top ups it does expire in 30 days. The $40.00 was used on my old phone number. The set up for phone and text use is not difficult if you follow the steps in the start guide. As for other uses it is more complicated to set up but can be done it just takes some time. The screen is exactly as appeared on TV and online...it is a 4 inch screen and I find it easy to see and to use. I am sorry the other purchasers did not have a good experience.

I received this phone almost 2 weeks ago. It is a great buy, lots of bonuses, easy to use, I am new to windows but I have not had any problem. You can't go wrong, a smart looking phone without the contract.
