The Sibu Story: A Tale of Sea Buckthorn
High in the Himalayas, there is a bight orange berry that has nourished generations of ancient mountain dwellers. Scientists call this wholesome berry Hippophae rhamnoides, but Himalayan natives call it "sea buckthorn". The primary ingredient of Sibu Beauty products can be found clinging to rock walls and growing along glacier-fed streams at elevations from 10,000 to 12,000 feet above sea level. Considered the roof of the world, the Himalayas are home to this willow-leaved, thorn and berry-laden plant.
Sibu founder Bruce McMullin stumbled across this unique fruit white visiting the region and was inspired to create a company based on sea buckthorn's remarkable properties and ancient folklore. Sibu is also known as the "Sea Buckthorn Company". McMullin and co-founder Ryan Lewis began the company by using science that was readily available. They found hundreds of studies which lauded the extraordinary levels of vitamin C & E, essential fatty acids and dozens of other bioactive substances found in sea buckthorn. Over 120 specific studies on seabuckthorn and countless studies on the biological properties found in Sea Buckthorn have shown that this little berry helps to promote health. Sea Buckthorn has earned its title of superfruit because it features a variety of powerful anti-oxidants and is the only plant in the world known to contain essential fatty acids 3, 6, 7, and 9.
Before sea buckthorn can be used to create a product, it must make a remarkable journey. Just as has been done for generations, villagers living high in the Himalayas harvest the sea buckthorn berries in the early hours of the morning. Only the berries that are perfectly ripe are chosen and gathered into cloth sack and then into large tubs to be sorted and immediately processed. Once the berries are picked, the processing time clock begins. Sea buckthorn berries must be picked in the cool hours of the morning before the intense radiation of the sun can rob the berries of their nutritive properties. Harvesters - more than 2500 people employed by Sibu - have only six to eight weeks to gather this precious fruit before it loses its potency. Because of Sibu's commitment to fair trade - those two months of employment provide enough income to sustain their families throughout the harsh winter. To capture it in its most potent state, the berry will be pureed that same morning in the local village where harvesters and their families have lived for hundreds of years. This is where ancient processing techniques meet modern technology. The berries are made into a traditional puree and then promptly delivered to Sibu's processing facilities, frozen and sent to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Sibu has spent a great amount of time and effort to bring you the best sea buckthorn berries available in the world. Whenever possible, the company uses packaging, literature and shipping materials that are easily recyclable, met Forest Stewardship Council guidelines and promote a greener, more earth-friendly environment.
