This uncirculated $100 Confederate note dates from 1862 (152 years old) and is a high quality collectable from one of the most turbulent times in American history.

The note features a highly-detailed illustration of a locomotive with a steamship on the water in the background, alluding to the prominence of steam technology at that time. A milkmaid with a bucket on her head standing in a rich southern landscape appears at the left of the note. "Confederate States of America" is printed boldly across the centre of the note in a style that is now viewed as an iconic element of this era.

More Information:
The inscription on the banknote reads: "Six months after Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and the United States / The CONFEDERATE STATES of AMERICA Will pay ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS to Bearer with Interest at two cents per day RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL DUES EXCEPT EXPORT DUTIES."  Interest was paid annually, and interest was in fact paid on most notes, as indicated by stampings on the back.

In 1862, the banknotes represented a promise to pay in hard currency, which would have been gold or silver coinage. After the defeat of the South, these notes became unredeemable. While this was a huge loss to the note holders of the time, this also allowed for many examples to be saved, and makes it possible for collectors today to own a genuine piece of American history.
