This 1937 silver dollar is in superb choice to gem brilliant uncirculated condition. 1937 was the first year of issue bearing the effigy of King George VI, and a low mintage issue with only 241,000 coins produced. Only a small percentage of these coins were kept in uncirculated condition and this is one of the highest quality surviving examples.
George VI was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from December 11 1936 until his death in 1952. He was the last Emperor of India and the first Head of the Commonwealth. This silver dollar comes displayed in professional coin holder.
George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George) was born 14th December 1895. He was the second son of King George V, as the second son was not expected to inherit the throne. He spent his early years in the shadow of his brother (the heir apparent). He served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during World War I. In 1923 he married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and they had two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret.
George's brother ascended to the throne upon the death of their father in 1936. His brother later abdicated in order to marry, and George then ascended the throne as the third monarch of the House of Windsor.
