This collection includes 10 original mints rolls (500 coins total) of Canada's scarce last one cent coins, 5 rolls in Copper Plated Zinc (non-magnetic), plus 5 rolls in struck in Copper Plated Steel (magnetic). The rolls include a special collector last issue wrap. A set of three historic cent coins is also included. The first of these is a large cent from the reign of King George V, dated between 1911 and 1920. The next coin is Canada's first small cent issue, also featuring King George V and dated from 1920 to 1936. The last coin is from the introduction of our modern maple leaf design during the reign of King George VI, and will be dated from 1937 to 1952.
After a 154 year history, Canada's one cent coin was officially discontinued on May 4, 2012. While 2012 mintage figures will not be released until the spring of 2013, these coins are nearly impossible to find in change, reminiscent of the rare 1991 quarter (which now sells for about $500 per roll). These coins are expected to be the lowest mintage in many decades.
To make this issue even more interesting, two distinctly different types of coins were produced during the short production run. The first coins were produced using magnetic copper plated multiply steel blanks, while coins produced after this first run were struck using non-magnetic copper plated zinc blanks. While both varieties appear to be scarce, the copper plated steel coins appear to be the most difficult to obtain.
