This original set of face and back design bank notes was produced in 1917 for the Canadian Bank of Commerce. While most notes printed in this design were regular notes to be issued for circulation, this set is one of the first trial notes used to test the new printing plates and obtain approvals from the top bank officials to proceed with printing notes for circulation.
The set includes a separate face proof and back design proof note. This set was saved in the archives of the American Banknote Company for nearly a century, and today presents a rare opportunity for a very small number of collectors to own an important piece of Canadian banking and paper money history. Information about the notes and a history of the Canadian Bank of Commerce is also included.
Face Design: Pastoral Landscape, Juno with bull, Ceres, goat herd
Back Design: Mercury, British Crown over bank seal, Ceres
Before the 1940s, most of Canada’s bank notes in denominations of $5 and higher were issued by the chartered banks. The Canadian Banknote Company (Ottawa) and the American Banknote Company (Ottawa) printed most of the banknotes for Canada's Chartered banks. Both of these banknote companies kept proofs of some of the chartered bank notes they have printed over the last 150 years. Until very recently, the only place one could generally find a proof note was in a museum such as the National Currency Collection.
Rarity: Less than 75 of these proof sets are estimated to exist.
