This is a good quality scarce French denier coin dating from the 11th to 13th century, together with an information page about the coin and certificate of authenticity. The coin provides a fascinating window into what life in Europe was like during the Middle Ages. It is intriguing to imagine who used this coin and what transactions were once made with it.

Silver deniers of medieval France are an interesting series which highlights the history of Feudal Europe at a time when the church controlled most aspects of daily life. While some coinage was produced by the King for circulation throughout all of France and for international trade, most coinage was locally produced and circulated in a small geographic region. In many cases, the coins were produced under the authority of the local Bishop, and included an inscription indicating the name of the Bishop and the region where it was produced. Accordingly, crosses, angels, amulets and other religious symbols are typical of these coins.  Nearly 2000 different types of silver deniers have been identified and catalogued, many of which are extremely rare.
