This "Large Beads, Pointed 5" is the rarest variety of 1965 silver dollar struck for collectors, ICCS certified in superb Proof-like-66 condition, with a subtle frosted cameo contrast.
In 1965, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the first major portrait change on Canadian coinage since Queen Elizabeth II first appeared on Canadian coins in 1953. The new "tiara portrait" presents the Queen as a mature woman, in contrast to the original "laureate portrait".
As the new effigy coins were being produced for the first time, several design modifications were made to enhance the appearance of the coins and extend the life of the production dies. This resulted in five different widely recognized varieties for the 1965 silver dollar.
The highest quality coins produced for collectors in 1965 were "proof-like", created using specially prepared highly polished dies and extra striking pressure on a slow moving coin press. This process resulted in near perfect coins with a mirror-like surface. While almost all proof-like coins from this year were produced using dies with very small beads around the perimeter of the obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth, a very small
number of coins were also produced at the end of the year using dies with comparatively large beads. These large beads coins are extremely rare on proof-like issues, and are highly valued by collectors today.
