This high grade collection includes a 5 Kopek coin from the era of Catherine the Great dated from 1763-1796, "Wire Money" from the era of Ivan the Terrible 1560-1584 and a 1912 500 Rouble banknote, issued in 1912 during the time of the last Emperor of Russia, Czar Nicloas II, featuring a beautiful engraving of Peter the Great.

Catherine the Great 5 Kopek Coin 1763-1796 (Over 200 years old)

During the reign of Catherine the Great from 1763-1796, Russia issued very large copper 5 Kopek coins. These would have served as an important denomination in everyday transactions of the era. The coins are crudely struck and vary in weight from about 45 grams to 55 grams. The date is encircled by a wreath and a double headed eagle. The two headed eagle symbolizes Russia's geographical location in the middle of Europe and Asia. The two heads are needed to watch over the two continents to protect Russia's people. This coin is in Extremely fine to About Uncirculated condition.

Wire Kopek (Ivan the Terrible) 1560-1584
The term "wire money" comes from the minting technique. The planchets were made from rolled silver wire which was then cut into sections, depending upon the desired weight. The metal was tempered, then struck into coinage. These coins tend to be a bit crude and irregular.

Obverse: Image of Ivan on horseback carrying a lance

Reverse: 5-line legend inscribed in old cyrillic letters means "Grand Prince Ivan of Entire Rus"

Ivan IV, generally known as Ivan the Terrible, was crowned Grand Prince of Moscow in 1533 at age three.  In 1547 (at age 17) he declared himself Czar of all Russia, and set about centralizing the Russian government and consolidating his power. He engaged in a reign of terror against anyone he thought might oppose him, torturing and executing many thousands of his subjects, including his own son. Entire cities were and regions were left depopulated, thus he earned his title "The Terrible."

500 Rouble 1912 Banknote
The 1912 note features a beautifully engraved portrait of "Peter the Great" who ruled Russia from 1682 to 1696. The image of Peter the Great appears engraved and as a watermark in the white area of the note. The note is in 'about uncirculated" condition.
