When first released in 1977, Star Wars was an instant success, and soon became a pop culture phenomenon. The New Zealand Mint has now created a set of $1 legal tender real gold plated full colour collector coins featuring four of the most popular characters from Star Wars. Total mintage is limited to just 25,000.

The four coins feature:
Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, R2-D2 and Darth Vader

Perhaps of equal collectability to the coins in this set is the special collector presentation case. This case is in the form of a Darth Vader mask. When the case is opened, there is a sound effect of Darth Vader breathing.  Only a small percentage of the mintage has been released in this premium presentation case.

Cool coins, but...

By The Fuzz

Bought these coins for my brother as a Christmas gift. When the set arrived, I had to check & make sure everything was there.

When I opened the case, the sound was choppy & cut out, or didn't even sound at all! Thought maybe the batteries needed changing, but that didn't work. When I was fiddling with the case to see what could be wrong, when I tilted it towards the light, that's when I discovered the little sensor is LIGHT censored, not motion censored! It works perfectly in a nicely lit room, but if you're in a darker room (or if you're wearing dark clothing & have it tilted towards you), doesn't work. Kind of dumb, but at least it does work! Crisis averted.

I then noticed there was no Certificate of Authenticity. I don't know much about coins, but for coins that are mint, there should be a COA to prove what number they are. I spoke with a TSC rep who told me something that didn't make any sense, so I decided to investigate myself by contacting The New Zealand Mint. Turns out, the little numbers (in a white rectangle) on the backs of the pieces of cardboard that the coins come in is their mintage out of the 25,000! I don't know why TSC wasn't aware of this, but if they had been, it would have saved me from a lot of worrying that I purchased fake coins!

After all that hassle, I hope my brother likes these!
