This coin is struck in one ounce of 99.99% pure gold, and depicts the calm yet unpredictable bison. It offers a tender portrait of a bison family at rest on the plains that make up their natural habitat, depicting a male and female bison alongside a young bison who turns his gaze towards a bird in the foreground of the image. The fineness of engraving in this coin demonstrates the virtuosity of the Royal Canadian Mint's engravers, showcasing delicate details in not only the fur and features of these great beasts, but also in the hyper-realism of the tufts of grass they lounge on.
