In 1949, Newfoundland joined Canadian Confederation as the growing country's 10th Province. To mark this event, the Royal Canadian Mint struck a special issue Newfoundland themed silver dollar featuring a ship with historic ties to Newfoundland. This ship is "The Matthew". It is thought that John Cabot discovered Newfoundland in this ship in 1497. Below the ship is the Latin phrase "FLOREAT TERRA NOVA," which means "MAY THE NEW FOUND LAND FLOURISH". The obverse design features an uncrowned portrait of King George VI.

In addition to a 1949 silver dollar in excellent collectible condition, this collection also includes examples of the last coinage of Newfoundland in the denominations of 1 cent, 5 cents, ten cents and 25 cents, plus historic postage stamps. The coins date from 1917 to 1947. All coins of Newfoundland are now official legal tender coins of Canada, and they are highly collectible across all of Canada as pre-confederation issues.
