One cent coins were first produced in Canada in 1858, and continued to be produced for 154 years until they were officially discontinued on May 4, 2012. To mark the passing of this long tradition and to mark the 75th anniversary of the maple leaf design introduced in 1937, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced Canada's first half ounce pure silver penny coin. This proof finish coin features the classic cent design used from 1937 to 2012, together with selective pink gold plating on the leaves.
