This new 2014 $20 pure silver coin is the second in the Dinosaurs of Canada series. This pre-historic creature is viewed from its left side, with rows of small pieces of bony amour called "scutes", long tail, narrow head, short muscular forearms and long hind limbs with three toed claws are finely engraved. It is engraved with the word "CANADA," the date "2014" and the face value of "20 DOLLARS", as well as the scientific name "Scutellosaurus."
The coin is double struck with the Royal Canadian Mint's highest quality proof finish, and weighs just over one full ounce of .9999 fine silver. With a popular theme and a mintage limited to just 8,500 pieces, the demand for this coin is likely to far exceed the quantity produced.
Scutellosaurus (meaning "little-shielded lizard") was a herbivorous dinosaur that lived in North America around 200 to 196 million years ago, in the Early Jurassic times. Scutellosaurus was lightly built, and was probably capable of walking on its hind legs. It was around 4 feet long, and two feet tall tall, and weighed about 20 pounds. It had an unusually long tail, possibly to provide a counterbalance against the weight of the armored body.
