This $20 proof fine silver coin was designed by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc, with a fresh and light new perspective on the exemplary Canadian maple leaf, so that one could almost imagine looking up into an autumn sky to watch these gentle leaves fall slowly to earth. Engraving adds depth to the image by showcasing the silver maple's deeply cut veins and serrate leaf margins. This pure silver coin is engraved with the word "CANADA", the face value "20 DOLLARS" and the date "2014."
The coin is double struck with the Royal Canadian Mint's highest quality proof finish in .9999 fine silver. The coin has a diameter of 38mm and a generous silver weight of 89.95grams (almost three troy ounces). Mintage is limited to only 8,500 pieces. As a pure silver coin, this item is HST/GST exempt.
The maple leaf has long been an internationally recognized emblem of Canada, its people and the land itself. Canada has had a long relationship with the maple leaf, one that hearkens back to the beginning of the 18th century, when the maple leaf was adopted by French Canadians who dwelled along the St. Lawrence River; it was described by the first mayor of Montreal as "the symbol of the Canadian people." By the mid-1800s, it came to be included in the Coat of Arms of both Ontario and Quebec, and by 1921, was included in the federal Coat of Arms of Canada. In 1965, Canada's flag was changed from the Canadian Red Ensign to the maple leaf flag we know and love today.
