Mythology
In the Theogony of Hesiod (fl. 700 BC), Eros was a primeval god, son of Chaos (the original primeval emptiness of the universe), but later traditions made him the son of Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) by either Zeus (the king of the gods), Ares (god of war and of battle) or Hermes (divine messenger of the gods). Eros was god of passion and fertility. His brother was Anteros, the god of mutual love, who was sometimes described as his opponent. The chief associates of Eros were Pothos and Himeros (Longing and Desire). Later writers assumed the existence of a number of Eroses (like the several versions of the Roman Amor). In Alexandrian poetry he degenerated into a mischievous child.
In archaic art he was represented as a beautiful winged youth but tended to be made younger and younger until, by the Hellenistic period, he was an infant. His chief cult center was at Thespiae in Boeotia, where the Erotidia were celebrated. He also shared a sanctuary with Aphrodite on the north wall of the Acropolis in Athens. Perhaps the most famous of all Valentine symbols, Cupid the Roman god of love, has always played a role in the celebration.
About Vicenza Gold by Tagliamonte
This unique collection from Vicenza (Venice) Italy is the result of five years of research which lead to the rediscovery of the ancient art of Venetian Cameo gems. Mr. Nino Tagliamonte, along with two Venetian artists, successfully experimented with original Roman blending, processing and casting methods to develop a formula allowing them to create Venetian Cameo gems identical to the antique originals. Available in a variety of colours and set with 14K and 18K gold, the gems are hand wrought with incandescent glass, and the exact colour is established only when cooled. These beautiful works of art rival the most breathtaking genuine gemstones!
| | Choker necklaces are made up of one to three or more strands and lie snugly in the middle of your neck. This luxurious look is very Victorian and goes best with off-the-shoulder or elegant V-neck fashions. A classic length that accents virtually any outfit and compliments all necklines. This is the most versatile of all single strand lengths. The princess length necklace is best suited for crew and high necklines. It also compliments low plunging necklines. It's perfect support for a pendant or enhancer. Longer than the princess, and just a bit shorter than an opera length, the matinee necklace is the right choice for casual or business dressing. The opera necklace is the queen of all lengths. When worn as a single strand, it is refined and perfect for high or crew necklines. When doubled upon itself, it serves as a versatile two strand collar. Dripping with elegance the rope necklace was a favourite of Coco Chanel. Wrap it to create multi-strand necklaces and bracelets or double it around your waist for a slimming effect. | |
