Tanzanite is a blue variety of the gemsone zoisite. An extraordinary gemstone, tanzanites occur in only one place worldwide - the East African state of Tanzania, thus their name, tanzanite. Discovered by Masai shepherds in the Merelani Hills near Arusha in the north of Tanzania, tanzanites quickly were hailed as the "gemstone of the 20th century".
The popularity of tanzanites is greatly due to their unique colour. Running from ultramarine blue to light violet blue, these gemstones are most valued when they show a glimmer of purple. Interestingly enough, most raw tanzanite crystals are spoiled by a brownish-yellow component, which can be removed by the cutter if he or she heats the stone carefully in an oven to approximately 500°. Raw stones must be as free of inclusions as possible to avoid fissures.
At first welcomed as an affordable sapphire substitute, tanzanite soon came into its own. It is now the most popular semi-precious gemstone on the market. The blend of its exclusivity with its attractive colour helps it to remain immensely popular and a cherished stone by all.
