Gordon Ramsay
Born in 1966 in Scotland, Gordon Ramsay aspired to a life-long career as a professional footballer. He was, in fact, a very good soccer player and joined the Glasgow Rangers (Pro) at the age of 15. He played with the Rangers from 1982 until 1985 when a knee injury ended his career.
After a disappointing end to his soccer career, Ramsay turned to hotel management school. After graduating, he apprenticed with Marco Pierre White at Harveys in London. Two years later, he joined Albert Roux at Le Gavroche. He also worked for three years in France with master chefs Jöel Robuchon and Guy Savoy.
In 1993, Ramsay took the reins of the newly opened Aubergine. Within three years, he had earned two Michelin stars. After a break-up with the restaurants backers, Ramsay left Aubergine, taking his staff with him.
In 1998, Chef Ramsay opened his first wholly owned restaurant, Gordon Ramsays, at the age of 32. The London restaurant was quickly recognized as one of the best in the world and was awarded three stars by Michelin.
Chef Ramsays ferocious temper has made him a favourite of TV producers both here in America and in the UK. A delightful BBC program is Ramsays Kitchen Nightmares. Chef Ramsay travels around England visiting some of the worse run restaurants in the country and then spends the next two weeks trying to make them successful.
According to the BBC, Ramsay always succeeds in plucking the failing businesses from bankruptcy and putting them on firmer ground. Ramsays notoriety grew enormously with the release of Hells Kitchen. First airing in the UK, Ramsay has two weeks to turn British celebrities into professional chefs. The American version soon followed with a variety of candidates competing to win their own restaurant.
A second series of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares was followed by the debut of Channel 4's The F-Word, a high-octane food show which remains one of the channels highest rated shows.
2005 also saw the launch of Ramsays eighth UK restaurant, maze, in London and the opening of Gordon Ramsay in Tokyo. The year was rounded off with Gordon's award of an OBE in the New Year's Honours list.
In November 2006, Gordon made his stateside debut with the opening of Gordon Ramsay at The London in The London NYC Hotel. In July 2006, he opened La Noisette, which won a Michelin star in January 2007. Now known as Sloane Street by Gordon Ramsay, the space now offers exclusive private dining for groups. More restaurants followed such as Cielo, Maze and a few pubs like The Narrow, The Devonshire and The Warrington to only name a few. Since 1996, Ramsay has also written 20 books, hosted culinary events and contributed a food-and-drink column to The Times Saturday magazine; he seems unstoppable!
