This 2012 $1 Fine Silver coin celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the "Loon" dollar coin. This coin has two common loons swimming past the number "25". It has one loon reflecting on its past, the other looking towards its future.

This coin is the first to feature a soft matte finish to the entire field of your coin. The coin is designed by Robert-Ralph Carmichael, the artist who designed the first Loon coin.

The "Loon" dollar came into circulation in 1987 after its design was chosen by the Federal Government as a replacement for the original design of a fur trader and a native Canadian paddling a canoe. This change was necessitated as the original molds inexplicably disappeared between the Royal Canadian Mints Ottawa and Winnipeg facilities. This way they could protect against possible forgeries.
