In 1971, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the first double struck proof sets generally available to collectors. These are the absolute best quality coins and presentation produced by the Mint. The coins from 1971 to 1990 are presented in the original black leather cases of issue. The 1971 and 1972 sets include two dollar coins struck in nickel, while the sets from 1973 to 1990 include a nickel dollar and a special commemorative silver dollar. This set collection includes the important first year of issue, the very low mintage 1972 set (only 36,349 minted), and all other low mintage and key date through the entire first 20 years of issue.
