This ancient Greek Silver 1/12 stater features the head of a lion on the front, and a stylized inverse sun image on the back. The coin is an exceptional high quality example of one of the oldest coins in the world, dating back more than 2500 years to 525-494 BCE. The coin comes with a certificate of authenticity and a historic information page.

One of the first coins ever used as a medium of exchange anywhere in the world was created by the Ionian Greeks in western Asia Minor (modern Turkey) during the 6th century B.C. This coin is made of high quality silver and bears a lion's head on one side and a reverse sun image on the other. It was produced at Miletos, the southernmost of the twelve cities of the Ionian confederacy.

For several centuries prior to the invention of coined money, the Greeks had been engaged in colonization. The pressures created by an expanding population, together with the desire to foster trade, led to the establishment of settlements far from the mother cities. Southern Italy, Sicily, and the northern coastline of the Aegean were areas particularly popular with the settlers, but colonies were also established in Spain, southern Gaul, North Africa and along the Black Sea coastline.

Very small!

from Peterborough, Ontario.

It may be old, but it is very, very small. There was no good idea of size given during the yapping session. Lots of very close up shots. The certificates are not worth the paper they are written on, but they at least are very large.
