The Birds of Canada coins have been one of the most popular series ever produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, with two coins issued each year since 2007. Demand for some of these coins has far exceeded the mintage, with most earlier coins selling out early, and some appreciating in value in the secondary market as much as ten times the original issue price. This is the first coin in the series for 2014, and features the Eastern Meadowlark.

The Meadowlark displays its vibrant colours in mid-chant, perched on a fencepost amidst the wildflowers.

• Mintage: 17,500
• Composition: Cupronickel
• Finish: Specimen with colour
• Diameter (mm) 35
• Edge: Plain
• Face value: 25 cents
• Artist: Tony Bianco (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse)

The Eastern Meadowlark - The adult Eastern meadowlark measures from 19 to 28 cm and spans 35-40 cm across the wings. Adults have yellow underparts with a black "V" on the breast and white flanks with black streaks. The upper parts are mainly brown with black streaks. They have a long pointed bill and the head is striped with light brown and black. The song of this bird is of pure, melancholy whistles.
