This is an superb Choice About Uncirculated example of the rare 1953 5 cent Shoulder Fold, Far Maple Leaf "mule" or mixed die error variety. In 1953, two different major style types exist for both the reverse and obverse designs of the coin. The obverse had the Shoulder Fold and No Shoulder Fold types, while the reverse had a Near Leaf and Far Leaf variety. Almost all of the Shoulder Fold obverses were paired with the Far Maple Leaf reverse, and almost all of the No shoulder fold obverse types were paired with the Near Maple Leaf reverse. The crossing of these two types (mixing front and back) resulted in two extremely scarce varieties, the No Shoulder Fold with Near Leaf and the Shoulder Fold with Far Leaf. This Shoulder Fold, Far Maple Leaf "mule" coin has been independently graded and certified as Choice About Uncirculate AU-55 by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), the world's largest and most respected independent coin certification company. Coins certified by PCGS come encapsulated in a tamper proof hard acrylic protective holder which provides an attractive display and archival quality protection for the coin.
