A small hoard of 1923 $1 bank notes was recently discovered in an old safe by the heirs of the owners of a rural hotel in Western Canada that operated though the roaring twenties and 1930's. These notes were issued by the Dominion of Canada from 1923 until 1934 when they were replaced by the new small size Bank of Canada notes. It seems that the owner of the hotel liked to keep some of his profits in new $1 notes, and these notes have amazingly survived over 70 years in their original condition. Canadian Coin & Currency has acquired this entire unique group of notes, and is now excited to offer these extreme rarities exclusively on tSc. For some of these notes, only a handful of uncirculated examples have ever been sold in Canada before in the past 25 years.

While nearly all surviving uncirculated 1923 $1 notes are the last issue, being Campbell-Clark signatures, this note features the earlier and much rarer Campbell / Sellar signatures with a black seal (Charlton catalogue reference DC-25n)

The note comes sealed in protective packaging from Canadian Coin & Currency verifying their professional opinion of the grade of the note and that it is genuine. This note is graded as Choice Uncirculated 63 with Exceptional Paper Quality. This grade means that the note is new and has never circulated and is significantly better than an average uncirculated note. It does not have any visible counting bends, the corners are nearly perfect and sharp, and the ink is bright and vibrant. The paper will be crisp as newly issued and there will be a significant tactile feel to the intaglio printing.

Value: The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Paper money lists three different grades of uncirculated notes starting at the 1935 series. These would be typical uncirculated (UNC 60), choice Uncirculated (UNC 63) and GEM Uncirculated (UNC 65). However, choice and gem uncirculated notes are so rare on earlier Dominion of Canada issues that values are more often established by auction results. At a recent auction in the United States, a Canadian 1923 $1 note with a green seal was sold in Gem Uncirculated condition. While the Charlton catalogue listed this note in typical uncirculated condition at a value of $1,500 (Canadian), the note in GEM uncirculated condition sold for $6,000 US, plus a 15% buyer's premium, for a total selling price of about $9,000 Canadian.
