This $25 proof coin weighs a quarter-troy-ounce and is struck in 99.99% pure gold. The design features the wolverine, a powerful predator that dwells primarily in northern Canada. This coin is part of the "Untamed Canada" series launched by the Royal Canadian Mint, which showcases various Canadian creatures in a woodblock art-style design.

The coin is double-struck with several finishes (including deep mirroring, heavy frosting and soft matte) against a mirror background field. This is one of the highest quality finishes produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. The total mintage is limited to just 1,500 pieces.
The wolverine poses in a looming stance atop a rock while abstract, sun-burst style designs almost halo his head. He surveys his surroundings for predators and prey, his fearsome claws gripping the rock below him. An abstracted interpretation of the Boreal Forest and Rocky Mountains make up the background. "CANADA 2014" and "25 DOLLARS GULO GULO" are inscribed in a ring around the portrait.

The Canadian wolverine is named Gulo Gulo in Latin, referring to the apparently gluttonous nature of the creature. Although especially gluttonous behaviors have not been documented, it appears to eat its prey voraciously after it kills it, likely as a result of adapting to scarcely-encountered food. The greatest numbers of wolverines anywhere occur in northern Canada, primarily in remote reaches of the northern Boreal Forest. Though this animal is actually the largest land-dwelling species of weasel, it looks more like a small bear. It is known for its ability to kill prey many times larger than itself, such as moose, elk, and Canadian lynx; there is even a documented instance of a wolverine attacking a polar bear, and then clinging to its throat until it suffocated.
