The Anglo-American War of 1812 lasted for almost 3 years and resulted (for Canada) in a sense of victory and pride for their militia, which was credited with rebuffing American attempts to invade Upper and Lower Canada. One of the more memorable confrontations of this war was the 1813 Battle of Boston Harbour, between the frigates HMS Shannon and USS Chesapeake. Though the two ships were almost evenly matched in both armament and man-power, the superior naval gunnery and swordsmanship training provided to the crew of the HMS Shannon by Captain Broke ensured a swift-and very bloody-capture of the USS Chesapeake. Though longer, more devastating wars are memorialized more frequently and with greater passion, the War of 1812 played a fundamental part in the shaping of Canada's history.
