I would not buy a Dell again because of the warranty

I had the same experience when my Dell computer quit working while under extended warranty. They wanted me to figure out what was wrong with it and then they would send me the part for me to install. Luckily I work at a place with an IT department and they dealt with Dell and repaired my computer for me. Without them my computer would never have been repaired. The warranty is very misleading and they don't tell you that you have to be your own repairman. It is in home warranty because you have to do the repair yourself in your own home.

Not as advertised

I purchased the extended warranty along with a Dell laptop about 2 year's ago. The computer has been troublesome so I continued to use my 7 year old computer. Recently when I dusted off the "new" computer it did not respond to commands and could not send e-mails. I called the help line and after remote tests was told the hard drive of this computer was done, ie. I should not use it because security could be compromised. The 3 year warranty consisted of receiving a hard drive with the instructions to install it myself. I'm not technically inclined. Computer repair shops are located outside my remote area and installing the hard drive (downloading data) will cost up to $300 plus travel costs. Very strange since the hard drive was delivered by hand by a tech rep from a repair depot in the nearest city. I was handed the hard drive, told to buy a gizmo to download data, good luck and if I wanted to bring the computer to their shop $300. I get regular e-mails informing me I must either install this new hard drive or return it. My computer keeps telling me that it is not safe to use it. It all sounded so easy with the smooth talking Dell Rep.
