What was a birthday party for the princess became the major event in European society. It was called the Scorpion Ball, held each year in Monaco. Being invited was a highlight for a couple, and not receiving an invitation was almost an insult. Royalty and society did many things to make sure their names were on the list and working on this began early in the year. Gifts were sent to Monaco and Grace's charities.
In 1971 the King Constantine II of Greece and his wife Queen Anne Marie began work on a gift for Grace when they attended the Scorpion Ball that November. They had one of the greatest jewellers in Athens create designs for a bracelet that would be modern and yet reflect some of the ancient culture of Greece. Numerous designs were submitted and finally the king and queen chose a design that incorporated the very famous Greek key so there would be no question as to the origin of this gift. They let the word get out to the royalty of Monaco that such a special design was being worked on for the Scorpion Ball of 1971, thus trying to insure their invitations. The king and queen were in fact invited and the birthday gift was sent to Grace a week or so before the ball.
Grace wore the bracelet at the ball, making the king and queen of Greece very happy, and the piece was well noted in newspapers and magazines throughout Europe. Money well spent!
