Very decent dehydrator

By Dione

from Toronto

Bronze Reviewer

There are definitely pros and cons to this dehydrator. But overall, I do like it and would recommend it. It's great for someone who on occasion is in need of a dehydrator. I purchased this because I am vegan and consume mostly whole plant-based foods. So owning a dehydrator is great for creating versatile food textures but still having the natural nutritional enzymes. I purchased this dehydrator in 2013 and it still works just perfectly. But I am only now doing a review because I recently came back on TSC to buy the herbs screen and fruit leather tray so thought I would leave a review :-)

PROS:
(1) Great space saver. Okay, yes, this will take up space in your cupboards. But when compared to other larger more cumbersome ones I've seen, this is better. The good thing about this is the trays can rotate to collapse a little. I kept the box so when not in use, I put it back in the box and keep it in the back of the cupboard.

(2) Easy to use. Just plug in and voila!

(3) Saves money. Personally, I save money on snacks. I no long have to buy these ridiculously expensive healthy snacks like kale chips, apple chips, fruit roll-ups and also dried herbs.

(4) Now I can make my own healthy snack even healthy by controlling what ingredients go in.

(5) It's very quiet. I live in a very small condo and I can have this running overnight and not hear a sound. It's not completely silent. But similar to a gentle fan running in the Summer time.

(6) It reduces food waste. If fruit is going bad, I can make fruit chips or even blend and make fruit roll-ups. If greens are going bad, I can dehydrate and make it into snap chips. If herbs are going bad, I can dehydrate.

(7) Very inexpensive when compared to other dehydrators.

CONS:
(1) For some reason, sometimes the food doesn't evenly dehydrate at once. I find that sometimes I have to take out some parts and leave the rest to dry.

(2) I find the design a little annoying because the air circulation hole is in the centre so you cannot make perfect whole square with no hole in the centre. This can be annoying if you want to make wraps.

(3) No timer to turn off.

(4) Ronco does not have anywhere on their website if the trays, liquid trays, and herb screens are BPA free. Which is a little odd. I wish they would disclose that

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER:
This comes with 5 trays which I find enough. But you can also buy more trays. The only thing that's annoying is they are not sold here on TSC. So you have to order it from their website and shipping to Canada is very expensive. This is also the case with the additional trays such as the fruit leather and the herb screens. I purchased them because I really do use it - but I just don't like paying for shipping.

Very long review so hope it was useful.

Works Great!

I don't know what I was expecting but basically this dehydrator is just a fan with a heater in it. It doesn't get very hot, which is good because it would probably cook the food instead of dehydrating it. I made apple chips and dried kiwi on my first try and they turned out great, but a bit sour. I'll use a bit of sugar or honey next time. I've got banana slices in it right now as I write this. The machine itself is well built and feels like good quality plastic. It's pretty quiet but I could see how people might complain about the fan noise if their kitchen is an open plan room right by their living area. My kitchen is a separate room so it doesn't bother me at all. It's really just like having a small fan running, it's not loud. I'm planning to try making jerky soon but the user manual that comes with this isn't very detailed. I'm going to buy a dehydrating cookbook. But on the other hand, there's not much to it. Slice food, put food on trays, plug dehydrator into wall, wait. Maybe that's why the manual isn't very detailed. By the way, this is not a small machine. The trays "collapse" to a lower height, but it still doesn't save much room. I think I would've liked it better if it was round instead of square.

Good for the price

I bought this a couple years ago from TSC when it was as show stopper.

A nice inexpensive dehydrator great for those on a budget, in school, or just a newbie to dehydrating. It's a very basic, entry level dehydrator. No bells or whistles.

While the unit does have a fan, I found drying can be uneven. One piece of fruit will be dry while the piece right next to it is still wet on the surface or in the middle. Food has to be completely dry or it will mould in storage. I find that I have to remove some pieces early and let others dry longer. Plus I found the trays on the bottom process faster because they are nearer to the heat source, and that I have to rotate the order of the trays.

The unit is exceptionally quiet. It's not silent; it sounds like you have a small fan running on low speed.

By design, it has its limitations. The trays are shallow and stack, so you are limited in the height of foods you can dehydrate.

I had purchased this initially to dehydrate sugar flowers for cake decorating. It does a great job for small-ish flat flowers, but because of the stacking and shallow trays, larger flowers are not possible. A unit that had slide out trays where I could remove the upper trays to provide more height for larger/taller sugar flowers, would have been more practical for my crafting needs.

It can take several days to dehydrate some foods. It took 2 days to dehydrate cucumber slices, and almost 4 days to do orange and lemon slices.

If you are a gardener and looking to do a large amount of food dehydrating, this machine is likely not for you because of the time it takes for each batch and the need to constant monitor and rotate trays. But if you only want the dehydrator for drying herbs, small batches of citrus or the occasional treat then this unit will fit your needs.

There is no on/off switch or timer. To turn on the machine you plug it in. To turn if off you unplug it.

The unit is not small. Stacking the trays in "stow position" doesn't make the unit that much shorter. It states that the unit can be stored in a drawer or cupboard. The dimensions are larger than any drawer or cupboard that I've ever seen in a typical home. And it takes up a fair bit of counter space; which wouldn't be a problem except that it takes so long to dehydrate some things that this could be on your counter for days.

If you are just starting out and want to try food dehydrating or are only a casual dehydrator, then this is a good unit to start with. But if you are seriously into dehydrating, investing in a machine that has slide out trays, a larger fan that will help speed up the process, with on/off and timer abilities would likely be your better option.
