Product Overview
The Proof set is the highest quality coin set struck by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1987.
The coins in this set are "Proof" quality, the finest coins minted.  They are all double struck coins produced from specially prepared dies.  The fields (that is, the flat background areas on the coins) have a bright deep mirror finish, while the design and portrait of the Queen have a white frosted finish.  This extremely attractive effect is sometimes referred to as a "cameo proof", and can only be obtained in the Proof Sets.

The set includes six denominations from the one cent through to the dollar. The dollar's design features a Native Canadian and a Voyageur (a travelling agent for a fur company), paddling a canoe past a small island with two wind swept trees.  The vertical lines in the background represent the northern lights.

Voyageur Dollar - The Last Year of Issue:
1987 was the year that the Loon dollar replaced the nickel dollar, and no voyageur nickel dollars at all were produced for circulation.  In 1987, the voyageur dollar was only available in official collector sets from the Royal Canadian Mint.   This resulted in a very low total mintage of under 450,000 coins, just slightly higher than the mintage of Canada's first Voyageur dollar 52 years earlier in 1935.  (Only 175,000 in proof)

This high quality coin set comes packaged in a custom mahogany finish display case.
