Product Overview
This fully issued 1858 International Bank $1 note is one of the finest known surviving notes from a Canadian chartered bank with a brief but colourful history.  The note has been authenticated and graded by Canadian Coin & Currency as "Gem Uncirculated 65".  This designation is given only to notes in the highest quality near perfect original uncirculated condition.

Design:  The note features a young portrait of Queen Victoria at the left, and Prince Albert at the right.  The centre vignette features an image of Niagara Falls.  The back design is plain (as was typical for banknotes of this era), except for a large "ONE", which served as a "protector" to ensure the notes were not "raised" or altered to look like a higher denomination.  The presentation of the note includes a history of the International Bank of Canada.

The International Bank of Canada is sometimes referred to as a "wildcat bank".   During a time of rapid growth in Canada and relatively easy requirements to open for business, the ability to "print your own money" attracted some less reputable characters.  While it is uncertain if the International Bank's sole shareholder, Mr. Reed, ever intended to operate a legitimate business, he managed to issue close to $120,000 in bank notes before there was a run on the bank and they became unredeemable in late 1859.  The bank's charter was officially revoked in 1863.

These surviving notes are appreciated today by collectors for their history and art.  Although more notes from this bank have survived than from most banks which continued to honour and redeem their notes, premium quality uncirculated notes remain rare and highly sought after by collectors.
