This is the second coin in a low mintage high quality pure gold series of Great Explorers of Canada, and features one of the most recognized early explorers of Canada. The coin is double struck with a near flawless frosted proof finish which beautifully showcases an important Canadian historic scene. With a pure gold weight of just over half an ounce and mintage of just 2000 coins, this is a coin which will endure as being of historical significance, intrinsic value and as a scarce collectors' item.
The design shows a full-length three-quarter profile portrait of explorer Jacques Cartier, flanked by French soldiers and an aboriginal guide, as he stands atop a riverbank, surveying this new land of "Canada." The coin is engraved with the word "CANADA," the year "2013," and the face value of "200 DOLLARS."
Although Cartier was not the first European to visit eastern Canada, his discovery and exploration of the St. Lawrence laid the groundwork for centuries of trade and settlement to follow. He is counted among the great explorers of his era and it is from his map design and other records that Europeans gained some of their earliest understanding of the landscape of North America and the customs of its aboriginal residents.
