These sets from the year 2000 are some of the most sought after because the total mintage is extremely low, because there are two different issue types, and because only 3 of the 14 total coins included were ever issued for circulation.
Early in year 2000, proof-like quality coins were struck for collectors in Ottawa, as they had been in most other years, and these coins bear no mint marks as had been the usual practice. However, when the Mint's facilities become overburdened with demand for year 2000 Millennium coins, production was switched over to the Royal Canadian Mint's facilities in Winnipeg, where coins are normally made only for circulation. All collector issue coins made in Winnipeg were designated with a "W" mint mark, creating unique collector issues never issued for circulation.
Also as a result of Millennium coin production as well as surplus older coins remaining in storage, no regular polar bear $2 coins, $1 Loon or Caribou 25 ct coins were issued for circulation. Half dollars were also produced only in small quantities, and not distributed through the banking system.
Of the 14 coins included in these two sets, only the Ottawa issues of the 1 cent, 5 cent and 10 cent coins were produced for circulation. All of the other coins are scarce and highly sought after issues only available in sets like these.
